Was this the Semi Final or Quarter Final of the Derbyshire Shield, who knows? What we did know was that Belper were at Cockshut Lane determined to show Melbourne why they had won the league and what to expect for next season.

Melbourne hosted East Retford in the final league game of the season. Retford had beaten Melbourne earlier in the season and were one place above them in the league, the winner of today's game could claim 4th place.
Euen Holden made a couple of changes in the pack with Keir Biggins and Pete Birchall being replaced by Bob Stowell and Nigel Breakwell, Dave Middleton replaced Pete Ilott on the wing.

Melbourne turned up at Long Eaton on Wednesday evening to play this NLD semi final against League leaders Nott`s Casuals. The first problem was the refusal by the referee to allow the game to be played due to excess water on the pitch, after much forking and prodding of the pitch and then the arrival of sand to be put on the pitch we thought we were ready for the game to be confirmed as playable!!
Next problem was the Council official stating that it wasn't council sand and so couldn't be used - pitch and potentially match abandoned! After some frantic phone calls it was finally confirmed that we could use the flood-lit pitch at Derby RFC with a kick off at 21:00!! Well done to the Casuals stalwarts for marking the pitch out at the last minute.

Melbourne travelled to Chesterfield RFC to play against North Derbyshire in the penultimate league fixture of the season. Euen Holden was forced to make a few changes to the recent side with Stringer, Lucas, Devaney and Macer all unavailable.

It was nearly 2:30 before Worksop turned up at Cockshut Lane for this NLD quarter final match, Melbourne's minds were already on an early shower and an afternoon watching the Internationals when the cars finally pulled into the car park.

Only one change was made by Euen Holden from last weeks side and that was to bring Bob Stowell into the front row to replace the unavailable Pop Lakin. As last week the wind was howling down the pitch and Melbourne were asked to play with the wind during the first half.
