Belper came to Melbourne with a 100% record in the league so far this season, and were probably quietly confident that they would continue this run having beaten Melbourne in the same fixture last season.

The first twenty minutes of the game remained scoreless, the only chance going to Melbourne with James Perry missing an early penalty kick. The Melbourne forwards had lifted their game from last weeks display against Tupton, and were keeping the Belper defense working hard with some good runs from Robin Clayborn and Andy Woodcock.

Due to a late change Andy Fulton stepped into the Fly-Half position and controlled the backs excellently, there were some good ground made from all positions and it was only a matter of time before the first points came.

Melbourne secured good line out ball in the Belper 22 and drove hard towards the line, Will Judge grounding the ball, only for the referee to not give the try due to being unsighted. From the resulting scrum Ian Lucas drove over for the opening try, James Perry kicking the conversion.

It was then a great move from the backs that split the Belper Defense, Andy Watts receiving the ball in midfield breaking through the centres and off-loading to Pete Ilott to score under the posts, Perry slotting home the two points.

Melbourne were now on a roll, making good ground from their lineouts and attacking deep into the Belper 22, quick hands to Fulton who popped the ball back inside for Clayborn to break the last tackle and score under the posts. Perry again kicking the conversion to make the half time score 21 . 0.

The half time talk was to not sit back and allow Belper to start playing, and within minutes of the restart another Paul Macer turn over resulted in Pete Ilott breaking through the defense to score between the posts, Perry converted 28 .0
Belper did hit back with a fortunate try when their scrum half charged down a kick to touch and won the race to the try line to ground the ball, Steve Diamond adding the two points.

This only urged Melbourne to keep attacking the Belper line, good continuity between forwards and backs set up some good field positions. Melbourne winning good line-out ball in the Belper 22 and two more rolling mauls were taken over the try line by the forwards and grounded only to be disallowed again by the unsighted referee.

Melbourne finished the game strong with quick hands across the backs and Ashley Stringer diving over in the corner,Perry missing the conversion.

The final scoreline was 33.7 to the home side, it could have been a bigger scoreline but Melbourne were happier that they had played well and beaten a high flying Belper side.
