On a glorious winter afternoon when England were taking on the All Blacks on a pristine pitch in London, Melbourne 3rds were preparing to take on Ashby Bulls on a muddy pitch by Tesco.
Match ReportIn true 3rds style the team were only 11 strong, Ashby kindly negotiated a temporary transfer and both teams went out onto the pitch with 12. One other small hiccup ensued that was not reflected in the England v All Blacks game, no referee. Yet again Ashby came to the rescue and a ref was present by kick-off, with both teams agreeing to play 30mins each way. Ashby opened the scoring and soon had an early lead of 12:0, however Melbourne soon found their form and settled in to claw back some points. The first Melbourne try being scored by Sam Woodburn. Sam was playing his first seniors match, so well done Sam and we hope to see many more tries from you in senior games (note that your debut try pint will be carried forward until you turn up at the Hotel post match!). Richard Salty converted and Melbourne were 12:7. A second try in the first half from Ashley Stringer and a conversion from Salty took the score to 12:14. Ashby fought back and scored a further try to bring the half time score to 17:14. In the second half Melbourne proved the more dominant side. Ashby only scored one more try. Further Melbourne tries came from Dave ‘Dot’ Cotton and Ashley Stringer, who scored two tries. Salty converted all the tries and the final score was 22:35. Melbourne showed great passing and recycling of the ball, with the team playing like the team had been playing for years, not just a few weeks. As he went on about it so much special mentioned needs to go to John James who, for the first time ever, actually managed to pass the ball, with spin, and yes it led to a try! Scorers Tries: Stringer 2, Ilott 1, Cotton 1, Sam Woodburn 1 Cons: Saltie 5
