Q? Does my child have to have a gumshield?
AnsThe RFU "strongly recommends
the wearing of MouthGuards (and ShinPads) & ideally they
should be custom made from a dental impression of the teeth" ....... (
see ...RFU Continuum - Section Safety - point b. )
MRFC policy mirrors the RFU's recommendations.
Lead coach comment: wearing a mouthguard is 'best practice', that said... the onus is
on parents to make these decisions and not the club/me.
Q?Do you recommend other protection (eg
headguard, body armour, etc...)
Ans The RFU
will always recommend protection, but then...... you would expect them to wouldn't
you.
MRFC policy:Parental choice /player decision
Lead Coach comment:Some
people subscribe to the view that children get better techniques when not
relying on padding, some say that padding increases a players confidence when
engaging in contact. My son plays with only a mouthguard as I see absorbing
knocks/bumps as part of the ‘toughening up' process of this sport.
If a player
gets extra confidence from wearing eitherheadguard, shinguard, gloves, forearmguards, bodyarmour, kneepads, etc
then that's ok with me, however I will remove any protection that inhibits the
players ability to develop / play.
As I did
when a player turned up wearing insulated mittens ! or the player who's
headguard was so big it covered his eyes!
I will not prohibit players from
training/playing if they do not have any of the above
