An
excellent team performance from Melbourne U11 A's. Backs and forwards
combined well and tested a competent Ashby side at every opportunity. In the
set piece's the Melbourne forwards dominated the loose play but had a harder
time in the scrum, whilst the line out worked fairly well. The Melbourne
backs were well drilled and highly competative, running some excellent angles
of attack. First half Tries form Benstead (1) with an excellent interception
and Donnelly (2) displaying driving forward play, were capitalised on by
three excellent conversions from the 'rock steady' boot of Merrey. Ashby
answered with a sound try but failed to convert. The second half saw a
Melbourne side growing in confidence, dominating at the back and at the
front. A further Try from Donnelly, converted by Merrey, was answered by
Ashby with a late converted Try. Melbourne (A) 28 Ashby (A) 12..

The
second match of the morning saw the U11 (B's) deliver a spirited performance
against Ashby (A). The first half was hotly contested with a display of
flowing rugby from Ashby and gritty defence from Melbourne (B). With three
converted tries to Ashby's credit, half time saw Melbourne U11's behind but
getting progressively more into the game. Throughout the second half the
Melbourne defence was solid and the backs and forwards combined to make
attacks that kept Ashby in their own half for long periods. Creditable debuts
were made by Agar, Gwinnutt and Shacklock for Melbourne. A further try by
Ashby saw them win. Melbourne (B) 0 Ashby (A) 26.
